Environmental Sustainability in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
To pre-internship Zoe:
Since two months seems so short, you probably won’t expect to find a second home in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) this summer. Although it will be hard to have to be so far away from friends and family, you’ll figure out the best times to call and how to navigate the time differences. You may not know it yet, but you will come to love this city and its people, and I can say now I wouldn’t have traded it for anywhere else.
I’m incredibly grateful for everything I gained in Vietnam this summer. Working at a tech startup in HCMC not only allowed me to develop my technical skills, but also connect with my coworkers and learn more about myself. Zoe, although these foreign people and places may seem daunting, don’t be afraid to reach out and step outside of your comfort zone. You will get to know some pretty cool people and make new friends in unsuspecting places. Not only will they teach you about their food and culture, but you’ll be able to learn more about their lives. For friends who haven’t had the opportunity to go abroad yet, you will also see the impact you can have by teaching them about the places you’ve been and your life in America. It’s a beautiful exchange of stories and experiences. Hearing from a local buddy, how you make her see her country in a new light and make the world seem so much bigger, will warm your heart.

Next, some pieces of advice. First, I would recommend trying to learn some Vietnamese before you go abroad. Although Google translate and some form of hand signals will generally be enough, you’ll feel more comfortable being able to communicate through words. It will be really hard to pick up the language (each word has six different tones!), but try to be more intentional about learning new phrases and practicing with locals.
Second, take this opportunity to travel! You may not know anything about Vietnam yet, but you’ll learn there are so many unique towns and cities throughout the country. Each region has its own specialties and local quirks which you will come to admire firsthand. Make the most of your time there, and don’t hesitate to plan those spontaneous weekend trips (definitely don’t miss out on Halong Bay and Da Nang).
Finally, take more time for yourself to explore the city. Although it will be nice to get into a routine, remember not to let each day turn into the same, because they’ll start slipping by before you know it. Take every day as a new opportunity to visit other districts, go to more cafes and local shops, and just walk around and make the city feel like your own. There are so many hidden gems that you’ll want to remember when you come back someday.
Overall, don’t be afraid to try new things and have fun! This will be the best summer of your life.
Sincerely,
Zoe
